The downside is that teachers don't always teach this or even consistently dance with "proper" technique. Its fundamentals are based on constant forward movement from the follower and once that part clicks for you, the speed of learning becomes incredibly fast. I came to the decision after having had 6 months of classes in each, and chose Cuban for the same reasons as you, and also because I liked the music a lot more. I'm a dancer of salsa Cubana*, and I have to say that I don't regret the choice despite LA being a much easier choice.
